Luca Lanzi (born in Bologna in 1977) studied at academies of fine arts in Bologna and Berlin-Weissensee. In 2005, he became a fellow of the Collegio Artistico Venturoli Foundation. In 2011, works by Lanzi were exhibited at the Museum of Ceramics in Faenza and were acquired for the collection of the city of Modena.

The motif of the fetish object in the form of a doll is a persistent leitmotif in Luca Lanzi’s work as a whole. His interpretation synthesizes traditional representations of sacred idols with the products of childish fantasy. In both cases, the spell cast by these objects resides in their ability to capture aspects of invisible realms. They give some inkling of their creators’ souls and of the spirits which they warship in them.

To ride on a bird’s back has been humanity’s dream for thousands of years. Swans and geese form monogamous pair bonds that can last for years, and therefore symbolize conjugal faith. They often appear in mythology as saviours. The swanshaped swimming ring, the inspiration for the sculpture Salvagente, thematizes both themes, that of riding and of salvation.

Luca Lanzi’s drawings, produced originally purely as sketches for sculptural projects, have assumed an independent existence within his oeuvre. The planar image displayed here is reminiscent of ancient Egyptian low relief as well as of geometric constructive drawings in the Bauhaus style. Luca Lanzi’s work is characterized by a range of inspirations from art history and the child‘s imaginary world, by simplicity, concentration, and by the use of multilayered mixed media techniques, all of which interact to generate a poetry that is charged with magic.

Das Motiv des Fetisch-Objekts in Gestalt einer Puppe zieht sich durch das gesamte Werk von Luca Lanzi. Seine Interpretation vereint die traditionelle Bedeutung im Sinne von Götzenbildern mit den Hervorbringungen kindlicher Phantasie. In beiden Fällen liegt der Zauber darin, dass die Objekte etwas vom Unsichtbaren einfangen. Sie geben eine Ahnung von der Seele ihrer Schöpfer, von den Geistern, die diese in jenen verehren.

Der Ritt auf dem Vogelrücken ist seit Jahrtausenden ein Traum des Menschen. Schwäne und Gänse gehen langjährige Paarbeziehungen ein und gelten daher als Symbol ehelicher Treue. In der Mythologie treten sie häufig als Retter auf. Der Schwimmring in Schwanenform, Inspiration für die Plastik Salvagente, thematisiert beides: Das Reiten und das Gerettetwerden.

Luca Lanzis Zeichnungen, ursprünglich reine Bildhauer-Skizzen, haben sich innerhalb seines Werks verselbständigt. Das gezeigte Flachbild erinnert an altägyptische Reliefkunst und an geometrische Konstruktionszeichnungen im Bauhaus-Stil. Inspirationen aus der Kunstgeschichte und der kindlichen Vorstellungswelt, Einfachheit und Konzentration sowie die Verwendung vielschichtiger Mischtechniken prägen Luca Lanzis Werk und verdichten sich darin zu einer magisch aufgeladenen Poesie.
